![]() ![]() ![]() and then "Show Yourself" kills the momentum dead in its tracks. The song builds to a terrific close of swirling, overlapping guitars from Hinds and Bill Kelliher, and it seems we're off to the races. "Sultan's Curse" wastes no time in showcasing Mastodon's vastly improved vocal work, as both guitarist Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor sound infinitely more at ease behind the mic than ever before (I've always thought bassist Troy Sanders has been great in his vocal role). "Sultan's Curse" kicks things off with a storm of ferocious riffs and catchy melodies, a combo that will be at the center of Emperor of Sand. Mastodon's rapid ascent to the top of Critical Reception Mountain early in their career has only made their two-album slide all the more questioned: Were they trying to be more accessible and get a radio hit? Were they burnt out? Does Brent Hinds really hate playing in a metal band? Did they really just fluke their way into three All-Time albums? Fair or not, their seventh album, Emperor of Sand, feels like a make or break album for the band, one that will either return them to metal prominence as a great band, or seal their fate as a good band that had a transcendent six years once. Since their crushing debut Remission in 2002, the quartet has released five more albums, including back-to-back-to-back classics in Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye, before falling back to earth and releasing two intermittently enjoyable, but really only ok to good albums in The Hunter and Once More 'Round the Sun. It may not be Blood Mountain, but it's surely a kickass album.Mastodon is a band that needs no introduction they are on the shortlist of bands that have influenced and defined the genre thus far in the 21st Century. Overall this album is definitely an incredible album. It's truly a masterpiece and one of the best of Mastodon's album closers. It's a ballady type song for the first 5-ish minutes and then turns into a fast and furious song. Jaguar God is the perfect way to finish the album off. It's definitely a gem I didn't realize the beauty of for a while. The vocal delivery thanks to Scott Kelly is some of the best on the album. It switches from the heavy riff to a soft, slow chorus that is almost beautiful, which isn't commonly used to describe a Mastodon song. The heavy, crunchy, sludgy riff that backs Troy's vocals in the riff is fucking intense. This is easily the best song on the album and my third favorite of their whole discography. I read a review that called it a Shinedown song with more complex Instrumentation and I couldn't have said it any better. This is a traditional hard rock song with the magical Mastodon touch added to it. Brann absolutely kills the drumming on this song and is probably his best effort on the record. It keeps it's originality while also nodding to their past. It's not a bad song by any means, but just the least best of the album.Īncient Kingdom is an awesome song. There's just nothing really special to this song. It's a song I took notice of after my first listen and has been a strongpoint of this record ever since.Īn unfortunate low point of the album. The sentencing song as I like to call it, Roots Remain tells of the desert leader sentencing the man to death. Spark up a joint and just chill to this song. It's definitely a highlight of the album and is a song I'm definitely glad I got to see this live. That's all you need.Īfter my first listen of this album I didn't really remember this song much, but after about 7 or so more I can't understand how I missed it. ![]() It's very different from anything Massivedong has ever released and it really works. One strange thing I noticed about this song was that the vocals were oddly low in the mix, but it doesn't bring the song down at all.Īh yes the infamous soft pop ish single. The slow soft intro thing starts the album off in an ominous tone which quickly goes into the sick intro riff. It was really an incredible way to start the album. This song was definitely an instant classic for me. ![]()
